At a New Year’s Day party in 1998 Curt Moore and Jon Eriksen were talking about music, bands, and group sounds and agreed that the “Cal Tjader” sound was one of the their favorites.
An alumni band of Cal’s ex-sidemen carried on with the sound for awhile but was no longer performing. Jon and Curt decided to form a group with that instrumentation and play some of the “classics’ that Tjader had made famous and explore other music and genres, expanding the “Tjader” sound into new areas.
The first incarnation of Soul Sauce, Jon and Curt were joined by Jonathan Alfred, Tim Guiterez and Al Bent. They benefited by a program from Musician’s Local 6 that allowed them to make a video for local TV that they used for promo. Almost immediately they were getting “gigs” from the video. Local street fairs, festivals, and clubs, and with the help of Sonny Buxton and Pearl Wong they became a mainstay at Jazz at Pearl’s in North Beach.
They’ve recorded one official CD “Got Sauce” although there are several “bootlegs” of concert recordings over the years. The CD features Paul Potyen, Al Bent and Michelle Goerlitz joining Curt and Jon. The band is also featured on Curt’s instructional DVD “Afro-Cuban Drumset”.
Now, some 20 years later the band is still playing and better than ever. The current line-up has Curt and Jon joined by Rich Kuhns, Rich Girard and Michelle Goerlitz, all have been mainstays for years with the “Sauce”.
