The Kings Five Jazz Quintet has been playing venues in the bay area since early 2016. The band has a hip instrumental sound that swings and they deliver fun, family friendly entertainment that can be enjoyed by folks of all ages and musical interests.
Music Director: Pianist/Composer Abi Romero Ramirez recieved his Masters in Jazz Performance from SJSU. He has been a tenured professor in the prestigious Universidad de los Andes since 1999 as Director of the History of Music and Latin-American Music Chair.
Front Man: Saxophonist Jon Sundstrom is a Bay Area native who traveled to the east coast to study at Berklee College of Music before returning to the bay area.
Rhythm Section: Bob Sundstrom embarked on stage in jazz early playing with the Utah State High School Champions for Jazz, with the rhythm section and as a soloist. Scott King sat down and decided to get serious about studying the bass and is now our mainstay bass player. Joe Neipp is a San Francisco Bay Area percussionist with over 35 years experience nationally and internationally.

Abi Romero - Piano and Keyboards: Pianist Composer Abi Romero Ramirez had been a tenured professor in the prestigious Universidad de los Andes since 1999, as the Director of the History of Music and Latin-American Music Chair. Born in the Venezuelan Andes, he obtained a Bachelor in Music Degree from Universidad Cecilio Acosta in 1993. In 2005 he moved to the Bay Area to pursue Graduate Studies at SJSU, where, in 2007, he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Master of Arts (Jazz Performance). In Venezuela, he produced the 2009 and 2011 Merida International Jazz & Blues Festivals.
Jon Sundstrom - Tenor and Alto Saxophone / Vocals:
Jon is a Bay Area native and has been studying music for more than 12 years. His passion for saxophone and jazz led him to the East Coast, where he had the opportunity to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. While studying at Berklee, he participated in multiple jazz groups and gigged around the Boston music scene. Jon has now returned to the bay area and is excited to a have found such a great group of musicians to collaborate with.
Bob Sundstrom - Acoustic and Electric Guitars:
Bob has been in love with the guitar from his first lesson at the age of eight and embarked on stage in jazz early. Bob played with the Utah State High School Champions for Jazz as a member of the rhythym section and as a soloist. Bob went on to study in the guitar program under Mike Christiansen, Director of the Utah State University and has since enjoyed teaching and playing on stage with various groups. Bob is now excited to express his love of jazz with his son Jon as part of King's Five!
Scott King - Acoustic Bass:
What else can we say? Scott showed up and decided to get serious about studying the bass, and here is the result, a mainstay of our rhythm section. Scott's straight ahead style and provides a solid platform for his band mates to express themselves in energetic and often explosive solos.
Charles "Chas" Benedict - Drums and Percussion
As a percussionist, Chas has been in numerous rock 'n roll, blues, jazz and swing bands both on the kit and hand percussion. His credits include the 1990s proto-Beatles tribute band 'Daytripper', and swing-blues combo 'The Allnighters' in San Diego, and more recently the grungy blues-rock of The Midnight Flyers in Merced. He has also lent his talents to the 'pit' orchestras at Playhouse Merced, Merced College Theater, as well as the MC Jazz Ensemble. He is thrilled to be associated with, and helping to form, this latest musical collaboration.
