Epic jazz super group, Legends and Friends (including musicians from Bay Area Reggae Band Native Elements*), is a thrilling small jazz ensemble that delivers plenty of hot fire to each and every performance it survives. Whether reaching the outer limits of acceptable sonority or playing with a sweetness that guides audience members to true love, Legends and Friends never apologizes. The group's impassioned, irreverent approach to America's greatest art form reminds listeners that it is indeed, okay, to get lost in one's subconscious and relish the beauty that comes from being squarely placed in the cross hairs of the present tense.
Founded by tenor sax frontman Mike Bazlamit, Legends and Friends has been performing together, regularly, for six hard fought years. Mike is known to audiences for his powerful tone, lightning-fast arpeggios and uncanny ability to test the endurance of captivated listeners until they join in his euphoria with hoots, hollers, busy feet and clapping hands. Mike Bazlamit's lifelong dedication to the study of the saxophone and the art of live performance come together at every Legends and Friends show to reward the audience with a night they'll remember, for at least a few days.
Trumpet player, Brian Switzer, provides an air of sophistication to the complex sound of the Legends and Friends ensemble. Brian stopped trying to compete with Mike's boisterous contributions long ago, and instead walks along a path of patience, melody, beauty, boutique intervals, and pensive declarations. Comfortable in a wide range of styles from arena rock, toured with both Muse and Train, to academic brass ensemble music, Brian's gorgeous trumpet tone is the Ying to Mike's saxophone Yang. With a relationship based on trust and intuition , Brian's trumpet and Mike's sax weave and dodge around each other like a flock of birds: a beautiful flock of two.
Pianist, composer and satirist, Ben Thompson, is the third founding member of the Epic Jazz Supergroup, Legends and Friends. A reluctant product of the Suzuki Method, Ben has been playing piano since he was old enough to run the record player in his parent's living room. Ben is largely responsible for the architecture of each song presented during a Legends and Friends performance. Ben Thompson is a human jukebox who sets the improvisational pace by utilizing East Asian scales, classical minimalist elements of Steve Reich and Philip Glass, hip-hop hooks and cacophonous, nondescript chord structures that send the Legends and Friends' most cherished songs into the stratosphere.
Mike Bazlamit, Brian Switzer, and Ben Thompson have been playing together since the 1990's, which is relevant considering that they were born in the late seventies. Most of their stage time together has been with the legendary Bay Area reggae group, Native Elements.
Drummer Brandon Farmer is a superstar waiting to happen. Legends and Friends is grateful that Brandon has dedicated his talents to our epic jazz supergroup. Brandon plays the drums with breathtakingly fast hands and blistering technical prowess. He somehow has the magic ability to execute hours and hours of evolved rhythmic interpretations that are as melodic as they are danceable. Brandon is able to create waves of time. His understanding of musical storytelling turns each song into a chapter in the life of Legends and Friends and their audience. Brandon's drum solos are so masterful that he often freezes the room. Diners, barflies, waitstaff and the rest of Legends and Friends all stop, dead in their tracks, and stare in true amazement at the wealth of knowledge pouring out of Brandon Farmer and his well behaved trap kit. Brandon is a legend and a friend, indeed.
Bass Player, Marvin Ibe, is a mythical hypnotist, of sorts. Brian and Mike discovered Marvin when he was a member of the opening act for a Native Elements gig. Marvin cradles the bass with a natural air, reserved only for those who have spent more time in the last decade playing than with instrument free hands. Marvin is a student of rhythm, tone and pattern. His hypnotic, genre bending explorations provide the foundation for the rest of the members of Legends and Friends to freely get lost in transcendent creation.
Legends and Friends care deeply about the audience. The band members value those who are kind enough to pause and give their special brand of jazz an honest listen. Legends and Friends loves talking to people on set-breaks. While only some of us are legends, we can all be friends.
