I'll Remember Andrew
(This poem was written on Master/Student night after my arrival at the 7 Mile, since Andrew wanted one, and I had none.)
I”ll Remember Andrew
by Jeff Kaliss
dedicated to Vanessa Garcia and all her April guests at the 7 Mile House, where this was made
This lovely light, these sunny sounds
Will lengthen evening up and down
Skipping over scrub,
All the way from Chris’s barbecue,
All the way to the aromas of Oakland
To prove we’re prettier than Paris,
Juicier than the Big Apple.
We’ll sing goodbye to all we ever grieved,
‘Cause here we’ve grooved, are grooving, and will groove, together,
We’ll all remember April, and be glad.
We’ll be content we heard and made and made and heard music,
All the days through April;
Our hearts were so warm, we could feel each others’ hearts,
And Spring was new, and we knew it was new, and we knew we were new,
New as an unwaxed pair of undergraduate jazz ears,
Thrilling to the tutelage of Andrew’s alto.
We’re not afraid of Fall, not afraid of April’s tax forms,
‘Cause we’ll get returns on all the joy we played in April.
The kitchen will close, if it hasn’t already;
Lumpia lasts only as long as it can be crispy and dippable;
But we won’t forget, we won’t be lonely;
We’ll remember April and Andrew and the 7 Mile,
And we’ll be sure to take some home.
