LOONEY TUNES & MERRIE MELODIES @ THE 7 MILE
Animated jammers: Ben Stolorow, Dave Bendigkeit, Frank Tusa, Andrew Speight, & Vince Lateano.
Down in Rio, it was February 7th, up on Mission Street in San Francisco it'll be May 28th & 29th, but at the 7 Mile House, Manha de Carnaval was invoked during last Sunday's jam by the house ensemble, and it gave me a chance to chat with my daughter Natalie Kaliss, home from college and seated beside me at the front of the venue, about the bossa nova beat. In a non-verbal response to the next tune, What Is This Thing Called Love?, the lovely Quensella Miller, who'd been seated at the bar, delivered a 7 Mile High cocktail to her man, altoist and co-jamleader Andrew Speight, who was bopping to beat the band. The open-door weather was balmy, and there was something lusciously looney about the session, with Ben Stolorow and Vince Lateano duoing on a weird minimalist march at one point, and Andrew and guest Dave Bendigkeit doffing their horns to trade scat fours. Close to the end of the first set, Vince Lateano took the mike but admitted, "For the first time, I'm speechless!" No need for speech, folks, but remember the tip bucket, and don't forget to make it down to Don Alberts & Poetry (tonight, May 17th) and back to start the jazz week up again at next Sunday's Doghouse Jam.
