The May Muse
In the warmth of a May evening and an appreciative audience which included my own daughter Natalie Kaliss, and backed by the empathetic and imaginative Don Alberts & His Renaissance Band, I once again got to showcase poems by Don and myself, including my newest, based around a quote from my 1990's interview with bandleader Benny Carter. Don and I were delighted to share our third-Tuesday poetry evening with Katharine Harer, a published poet and instructor at Skyline Community College. And we were humbled by the decision of Jessica Levant, herself an author and the photographer responsible for those shots above, to spend her birthday evening digging the musical and literary creativity and showcasing her own fine volumes of bios and portraits of Bay Area jazz and blues luminaries (available at http://www.bayareajazzandbluesmusicians.com). Also appearing was 7 Mile favorite funster Buzz Brooks, who'll be the subject of a feature in the May 23rd San Francisco Chronicle, and the host of a Mirth & Jazz gathering at his Daly City domicile onSunday, May 29th (more info to come).
