What Is This Thing Called (Motherly) Love?
Mothers and others, including your blogger's son Nicholas Kaliss and Nick's mom and my wife Louise Whitlock, had filled up the 7 Mile by the time the Doghouse Mother's Day Jam kicked off this Sunday. Aside from the always scrumptious snacks and dinner food, Peppe Merolla, subbing for drummer Vince Lateano, delivered steaming servings of paradiddli. Peppe, recently returned from that other coast, feted fans old and new with his trademark extensive, dramatic use of every part of his drum kit. Co-leader Andrew Speight's alto sax solos were hot, tangy, and sweet, shared with Michael Zisman's lyrical bass tributaries and Ben Stolorow's sinuous keyboard exercises, with quotes from Monk to musicals interspersed. The many mothers present sipped complimentary mimosas, served up by owner and proud mom (and daughter) Vanessa Garcia. It all made you glad you were born.
