The shortest jazz evening of the year belonged to trumpeter and bandleader Dave Bendigkeit. But it allowed for a bounty of guest vocalists and drummers, and an opportunity, during the break between the first and second sets, for Keepers of the Flame anchor drummer Akira Tana to direct his colleagues' attention to the Solstice Strawberry Moon, a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon rising luscious and luminous through the balmy evening air, over the eastern horizon. The sparse but attentive audience was then invited back into Mario Bauza's tropical "Mambo Inn", with Dave interpolating a quote from "Stranger In Paradise", the other Dave (Udolf) channeling Lalo Schifrin, and Chris Amberger salsaing up and down his long strings. The spirit was shifted for Victor Young's "Weaver of Dreams", with Dave U playing out a tasty, tinkly lead, and partnering perfectly with Chris on the tricky changes of the coda. Dave's wife, singer Sherri Roberts, was recruited alongside drummer Paul Yonemura on "It Could Happen to You" and "Crazy He Calls Me", adding complementary ingredients: Sherri's languid lines and sloped intonations against Paul's crisp, crackly stick-and-brush work. Unlike the Warriors-Cavs game endlessly recycled in clips on the silent, looming tv monitors, the session ended on the upbeat with Dave B's rousing original "Matt-Man". And somehow, the night still seemed young.
