The Other 7 Mile House
The last 7 Mile House still in operation in the Bay Area was established circa 1858. But another 7 Mile House was built 5 years prior in 1853 along the original mile house route on Mission Road. It stood at the border of San Francisco and Daly CIty but to this day we haven't found anyone who can confirm it's exact location.
Stephen and Rose Salazar recently came into 7 Mile House bearing an antique map from 1870 of the "7 Mile House Property", when the lots of that area were for sale at that time. Stephen's Dad was an antique collector who passed away in 2016 and he was left with a vast collection of San Francisco memorabilia including photos, maps and old liquor bottles.
The Salazars are native San Franciscan and take pride in their antique possessions. Rose is a 5th generation Irish American and Stephen's family was from Spain.
Together, their love for history and old artifacts brought us to meet. They figured I would be interested in the map and of course I was!
Although it is of not our 7 Mile House, it is still a piece of history that needs to be preserved as part of the story of the Mile Houses.
If anyone knows anything about the 1st 7 Mile House on Old Mission Road, we would love you to come forward with stories, photos, maps or any information that may be pertinent. Our goal is to build a better picture of our past so we can preserve and celebrate it into the future!
